The Virtuous Life of a Christ-Centered Wife - Introduction

The three hardest tasks in the world are neither physical feats nor intellectual achievements, but moral acts: to return love for hate, to include the excluded, and to say, "I was wrong." - Sydney J. Harris
Before we get into the study of virtues--before we dig any deeper--let's start out by examining what virtues are, and why they are important to our walk with God.

First and foremost we're saved by grace. There's nothing that we can do to earn our salvation. Salvation has been imputed to us by God through faith in His son, Jesus Christ. The thing is however that those who believe in Jesus, believe He is Lord. Lord of the universe and Lord of our lives.

His wisdom exceeds ours, when it's both comfortable and uncomfortable. On the good days and the bad. Those who love God are willing to give up every selfish ambition and every sinful desire to follow His will.
Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. - Matthew 16:24
This doesn't mean that we walk perfectly by any means. That's where the grace of God is vital to our faith. We all struggle in this world. We all have good intentions, but our flesh keeps pulling us back.

Have you ever made a decision to do something worthwhile? Maybe you wanted to change a bad habit or incorporate a new one. A few days in, you gave up. Even though you knew that this was a good decision for you, you messed up (again) and you're down on yourself because you're weak. Join the club. It's called humanity. Our flesh is constantly at war with our Spirit and there's an ongoing battle to be won.

The important thing is that every time we fall, we have the opportunity to get back up again and get back in the race.

Leave the sin of the past behind you and focus on the road ahead. And if you fall? Pick yourself up and get back in the race.
Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. - Philippians 3:12-14, NIV

While we're going through these virtues, keep this in mind: we aren't perfect, but we're being perfected by faith. We're growing in grace. Learning what areas of our lives God is calling us to, and how to best set our sail.

2 Peter 1 is key to this study. Here we see that we're called to glory and virtue:
3 According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: 4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. 5 And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; 6 And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; 7 And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. 8 For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
And so we see that virtue is something we build on the foundation of our faith. It's about being concerned about right and wrong as we seek to serve God.

I see faith as the driving force behind virtue. Faith powers our decision to change, virtue is the modification of our behavior as we conform our lives to our principles.

Virtue takes effort, values don't.

Values are things that we deem as important. Virtues are characteristics of a person that come about by the way that we live. If we want to be patient, we must exercise patience. If we want to be self-controlled, we must exercise self control. And if we want to be kind, then we must show kindness to others.

The reason that we walk in virtue isn't to earn ourselves brownie points, or to proclaim our goodness to the world. C.S. Lewis wrote, "Don’t shine so others can see you. Shine so that through you, others can see Him."

Aspiring to be seen is in direct contrast to virtue which stems from a heart of humility.

I couldn't begin to take credit for the good things I do. It's the Holy Spirit that convicts me in the first place, and God that carries me through. Without Him I wouldn't have any peace, I wouldn't have hope, and I wouldn't have joy. These are merely a few of the ways He equips us for the journey.
For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. - Philippians 2:13
Finally, how is virtue different than the fruit of the Spirit? In many ways they are similar because they are both characteristics of a Christ-centered life, but they differ in that one involves effort and the other is the result of that effort.

Virtue is two-fold. It can be defined as a quality or it can be defined as practice and conformity. What we'll be looking at in this study is conforming our lives in accordance with Romans 12: 1-2
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

  2. "Values are things that we deem as important. Virtues are characteristics of a person that come about by the way that we live. If we want to be patient, we must exercise patience..."

This study comes at a good time as I am purposing to live intentionally, choosing life (Deut 30:19) and choosing to speak life as I respond to situations.

Just last week I sat down with my kids and we went through 1 Corinthians 13. I showed them what love looks like according to God and asked them to pray that he would show them what areas they needed help with. I began praying the same for myself.

As things pop up I remind myself, "love does not envy", "love is kind", speaking truth to myself. This morning God gave me an opportunity to use what he's been teaching me. I had quite an explosion of oatmeal to clean up, but praise God the Holy Spirit took over. No lost tempers, no raised voices and we had a peaceful ride to school.

    1. That's such a perfect example of the way that we grow in virtue. Thank you for sharing that, Jen!

    2. Praise God for his timing. I was doing a little praise dance and when I read your post, it all kind of clicked into place. The WHY and HOW of it all.

For further confirmation, I'd like to share the gift God gave me since then...

And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance forever.

And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places. Isaiah 32:17,18

  5. I have been following you on Facebook for a couple of months now. Because of you I started following Peak313 and am doing the Living and Active challenge. I have "met" some wonderful women because of that. I started beginning my day with podcasts from Heidi St. John and just started reading "Women Living Well" and working on the study guide. I am not trying to be boastful. I just want you to know that I have been working on bettering my relationship with Christ. I grew up in a loving, Christian home. We attended mass and read the Bible, but now I am wanting to have an even closer relationship. My husband and children have noticed a difference and the air in our home is peaceful. Thank you for your wonderful ministry.

  9. In my profession I have many opportunities to grow my "virtues" because I work with developmentally challenged adults. I have to deal with many "behaviors", tempers, attitudes, depression, etc. Patience is the virtue I have to continually develop & practice at my job. Also, I have to be able to show God's kind of agape love. I have to show love to people who many times aren't able to show love in return, even if they do feel it. So, this study is good for me.

  11. This should be a great study. Most of us know we should practice virtues in our life but I think most of us could not give a deep meaning of what that means. Studying them is the only way to really understand.

  15. I am enjoying learning in this study so far. Only thing I dislike is I didn't find this site sooner. But god knows what he is doing. I am also doing a study on prayer closet revival. Both compliment each other so well. Thank you for your obedience. God bless you.

  17. Thank you for this study. I love my Lord and try to teach my children how to walk the Christian faith. Lately, their bickering and the way they talk to eachother has really bothered me, and I find myself thinking "Where did they learn to be so short-tempered, intolerant, and talk with such hateful voices" It was a good, hard slap in the face when I felt God's nudge the next time my temper exploded on a day I was weary and worn-down." From me"... I hung my head in shame and wondered if I am a phony. I wondered that surely, other Christian women don't struggle to control that bubbling anxiety over feeling like everyone's door mat, and let it erupt in a spewed fountain of complaints that I want to retract once the volcano has cooled. I want his grace and love to shine through me at all times, not just when it's easy. So thank you for giving me a stepping stone to get there.

  18. Thank you for this! I recently recommitted my life to Christ, and I'm so thankful for blogs like this helping me on my journey! For the first time ever, I am truly getting into an intimate relationship with Christ and can feel the Spirit working in my life. Of course, that's all opening me up to some hefty attacks from the enemy, so I'm very thankful for your blog and others helping me on the way!

  19. Interesting topic indeed, was just trying to lay both on the table, and found something interesting, i think some of the components of the fruit of the Holy Spirit are virtues, like patience, self-control, gentleness and they can only be attained when we have the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives, that is to say, the fruit of the Holy Spirit is simply an indication that the Holy Spirit is present if not so, then it wouldn't be called the FRUIT of the SPIRIT.
We can attain the fruit only by God, He who knows our hearts puts us in different situations and trials so that we may attain the components of the fruit, as was mentioned earlier, if we want to be patient, God will put us in a situation where we will learn to be patient, so it is with the other components of the Fruit.
Making a comparison of the Fruit of the Spirit and the Virtuous woman of prov 31, we see at the end of the chapter, the reason and source of her virtues, the FEAR of the LORD! in other words, a close and constant relationship with the LORD as HE daily trains her and she attains these virtues day by day, growing from grace to grace, denying herself and taking up the cross daily to follow Jesus. This is the root and source of who she is and what God is making her to be.
